Backyard Fowl Basics Class
Cost: $35/person
This is an in-person class located at our home in Richfield, MN and will cover backyard fowl basics for both chickens and ducks. We personally have a mixed flock, and care and considerations for these two types of animals is similar; however, there are some fundamental differences in both setup and ongoing care and security.
This class satisfies requirements for permit applications in Minneapolis and many metro suburbs.
Next Class is May 31st, 2025
This class will cover the following topics:
Biosecurity & Basic Safety Protocols
Chicken/Duck Breeds and Flock Dynamics
Fowl Anatomy, Injuries, and Illnesses
Coop Construction and Requirements
Predator-Proofing and Mitigation Tactics
Start-up and Ongoing Costs
Application Processes, Inspections, and Fees
Summer & Winter Preparations/Considerations
Enrichment Activities & Long-Term Care
All Things Egg-Related
Finding Resources & Community Engagement
We enjoy hosting this class in-person for two reasons:
1) We believe that hands-on experience in the learning process is both vital and enriching which both make for better long-term outcomes.
2) Good biosecurity practices are extremely important for the safety and security of your flock (and others’), and the basics we will set out for you during your visit with lay a good foundation for your own protocols at home.
Biosecurity: All attendees are required to have clean shoes or shoe coverings. Options include:
Indoor shoes that are free of dirt/visible debris
Outdoor shoes that have been cleaned and sanitized
Clean shoe/boot covers*
*We will have a few extra of these on hand for anyone that needs them.
